Indeed mau, Raffaele Riefoli, the composer of the song,seems to be the one who recorded it first.
However, the wikipedia entry for the song [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self_Control_(song) ] does not clarify which version was released first, one is safe to assume it was Branigan's :
"The song was recorded that same year with the same English lyrics by Italian singer Raf, who co-wrote the song with Giancarlo Bigazzi and Steve Piccolo. Branigan's version first hit #1 in Germany on June 15, 1984. Raf's version first hit #1 in Italy on June 23, 1984"
Raff's entry is even more vague on the subject: [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raffaele_Riefoli] "Self Control was recorded and released contemporaneously by American pop star Laura Branigan.."
More strangely, it is Branigan's entry [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Branigan] that states :
"The original version of Self Control, recorded few months earlier in 1984 by one of the song's co-writer Raffaele Riefoli (under the name Raf).."
So, even though you're probably right and Branigan's is not the 'original' version, I think this is one of those rare cases where it is perhaps not 'wrong' to present another cover of the song as a 'Laura Branigan cover', not because hers' is the best known version, but because it was released probably a few weeks/months after the original version, with international success.
